art ain’t cheap

Normally we don’t talk too much about the visual art world over here at Culturebot. But George over at Superfluities has an interesting essay on the MOMA decision to up their entry fees from $12 to $20. He makes some interesting points about the difference between non-profits and for-profits, and the fact that even though they’re a private institution, MOMA takes a lot of public money, so the question arises: do they have a responsibility to remain accessible to the public? [He doesn’t actually say that, I just editorialized on that one].

Still, it is an interesting question. Personally, I can’t see paying $20 to look at paintings. But then I’ve never been much of one for static art anyway – I like to see/hear live people doing things.
