This just in – what sounds like an interesting performance from The Red Bastard. The press release is a little hyperbolic, perhaps, but Eric Davis is indeed a far-out clown.

World-renowned Canadian director, Sue Morrison, is the co-creator of some of Europe, North and South America’s hottest, edgiest clown shows. Together, New York clown Eric Davis and Ms.
Morrison are on the forefront of a movement which aims to bring the sacred return of clowning to contemporary audiences.

In this new show, Davis stars as a bone-thin cantankerous clown, whose neurotic endeavors run the gambit of comic expression. Wildly impish one moment, pathetically gutless the next, he answers the call to an epic adventure only to find himself stranded in a cave for 100,000 years. Surrounded by the skeletons of failed attempts, he must now conquer a disembodied voice as he struggles to free himself
from 150 yards of industrial elastic in a transforming spandex cave. Antics range from the gut-busting ridiculous to the intimate and heart-felt as this unlikely hero fends off monsters, struggles to make a name for himself and quests to find the Glove of Never Ending Awesomeness.

Director Sue Morrison is the co-creator of some of Europe, North and South America’s hottest clown shows. She is an alumni of Toronto’s prestigious Second City Main Stage. In a search to find out what it means to “improvise from the heart”, she became the apprentice of Richard Pochinko, a Canadian clown teacher and Lecoq graduate who combined Native American Clowning Techniques with Lecoq physical theater principles to create a new approach to clowning. Ms. Morrison has since developed the method to create some of the world’s most celebrated clowns.

The result is not your typical, cutesy clown. Morrison’s clowns are often known for their extreme natures. They frequently display an uncanny ability to carry on intimate conversations with their audience. (Yes, they talk.) And they don’t dumb it down! Morrison’s clown shows have dealt with themes from quantum string theory (The Theory of Everything) to the Donner Party’s cannibalistic expedition (Sleeping Beauties). Recall the 2000 FringeNYC highly popular Clowns in the Vagina or Shannon Calcutta’s controversial topless performance in Out of My Skin for which she was named a Canadian National Treasure.

Eric Davis’s popular Bouffon character “Red Bastard” has been burning up the circus, vaudeville and variety scene winning both critical and audience praise for his original performance style. Recent directing credits include Saint Arlecchino, a masked commedia play at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. Eric is a faculty member at the People’s Improv Theater, which was voted Best Improv classes by New York Magazine.
