The timing for a performance art boom seems exactly right for urban China, which has reached a level of sophistication, affluence and self-absorption that leads naturally to self-reflection and critical analysis. But these are potentially dangerous notions to an authoritarian government.

Because performance art is very public, provocative and can start to look like political protest, the Communist Party’s paranoia becomes almost understandable.
