art or pornography

Well, in this week’s issue of The New Yorker, Hilton Als suggests that contemporary performance might be a little less boring if it incorporated the more presentational and theatrical aspects of contemporary music: the histrionics of Karen O. from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, say. I don’t know – I’ve seen a lot of stuff with rock’n’roll theatrics that is still pretty boring. But there’s something to be said for passion and intensity vs. intellectual detachment and self-satisfaction.

But sometimes you can get both. Or neither. All at the same time.

This week’s flavorpill is hyping an appearance by Andrea Fraser in support of her new book, Museum Highlights.

According to The Pill, Fraser “rocked the collective art-world mind in 2003, when she sold herself to a collector for one night on the condition that their act be filmed and turned into an artwork.”

Of course, a debate ensues about is it “art or pornography“.
