New Dance Alliance has presented a truly impressive group of over 600 artists in the Performance Mix series. Now celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Performance Mix has become a festival showing the work of artists from New York City, across the United States, Canada and abroad. In 1987 Koosil-ja Hwang a.k.a Kumiko Kimoto presented a “postmodern” duet, in 1992 Douglas Dunn improvised with young saxophonist Norman Salant and artists including Homer Avila and Edisa Weeks, Arthur Aviles, Jane Comfort, Yasmeen Godder, Margarita Guergue/Hahn Rowe, Headlong Dance Theater, Dan Hurlin, Andrea Lerner/Rosane Chamecki, Jennifer Monson, Lenny Pickett, Sally Silvers, RoseAnne Spradlin, Merian Soto, Mariko Tanabe/Benoit LaChambre, Troika Ranch, Donna Uchizono, and Marlies Yearby graced our stages. In celebration of our 20th Anniversary a pre-performance video documentary Looking Back edited by Charles Dennis will show excerpts of works that New Dance Alliance has presented in Performance Mix over the last two decades.

In this year’s curatorial process (headed by NDA founder and director Karen Bernard, with artistic input from Artist Advisory Panel members Cynthia Berkshire, Michael Burke, Allison Farrow, Valerie Green, Trajal Harrell, Colleen Hooper, Cherylyn Lavagnino and Rachel Schroeder) NDA was challenged to really “Mix it Up”. Smart, funny, and poignant work by New York artists and guests from Boston, Minneapolis, Montreal, Philadelphia, Toronto, Washington D.C., Winnipeg, and Toulouse, France all with different approaches to experimental dance and performance will fill our stage. The opening night reception will be hosted by the Québec Government House.

The Performance Mix Festival continues to be a vital forum for the presenting of new work to audiences interested in the creative process and helps provide ancillary services for advancing artists’ careers through touring opportunities, free rehearsal space and management consultations.

The Performance Mix Festival will be presented in association with Joyce SoHo, 155 Mercer Street between Houston and Prince Street from Tuesday, March 28 through Sunday, April 2.
