Moving Theater – Without
Brennan Gerard and Ryan Kelly bring their first evening length production Without to the raw, open colonnade space at DNA (Dance New Amsterdam) for a three-night engagement.
Its been a long road for these darlings of downtown dance-theater, but after presenting scenes and test runs at Work & Process and the Old American Can Factory, Without has finally blossomed into an inspired work of movement and music that explores the collision between love and art in the lives of 19th century visionary poets-cum-lovers, Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud. With music by Debussy, Boulez and Patti Smith, and texts by Rimbaud, Moving Theater essentially creates a found performance, but what is found becomes entirely new through the companys diligent and boundary-defying processes.
Without includes performances from Janathan Drillet, Ashley Searles, Emilio Martinez Lopez, Nate Schenkkan, Elyse Sparkes, Eric Huebner and Peter Tantsits (whose Eight Songs for a Mad King made for a deliciously creepy Halloween in the fall), stage design by Josef Aseinza, costumes by Camille Assaf, lighting by Marcus Doshi, and dramaturgy by Kate Bredeson.
