About MOVE2HEAL:

Traditional and indigenous cultures, around the world, have used movement, voice and performance to heal individuals and communities from illness, dysfunction, natural disaster and war. Participants will explore the inherent connection between movement, performance and healing.

The work will include self-exploration, active listening, community building exercises, creative expression through movement, voice, and language improvisation physical, impulse-based autobiographical storytelling.

A 2006 U.S. Embassy Culture Connect Envoy in Cape Town, Pretoria, and Johannesburg, South Africa, ADAM McKINNEY was a recent artist-in-residence at the South African Ballet Theatre. He taught master classes at Moving Into Dance Mophatong, University of Johannesburg, Forgotten Angle Theatre Collective and Dance For All, and choreographed for Agulhas Theatre Works (Johannesburg, South Africa), a company committed to making dance available to all people – both the disabled and able-bodied.

Mr. McKinney has danced with several of the world’s leading dance companies including Bejart Ballet Lausanne and Alonzo King’s LINES Ballet and performed works by George Balanchine, Donald Byrd, David Parsons, Paul Taylor, Kurt Jooss, Robert North, Choo San-Gho, and Ben Stevenson.

Named one of the most influential African-Americans in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA by St. Vincent DePaul of Milwaukee, McKinney is dedicated to peacemaking through art, movement, and dance. He taught the course “Movement, Healing, Ritual and Performance” at the University of Ghana through NYU’s Global Program in the Spring of 2006 and conducted master classes in Accra, Ghana for the Ghana Dance Ensemble, the Africana Dance Company, and the National School for the Deaf.

He is the co-founder of DnA WORKS, an arts and service organization dedicated to creating projects and dialogue around culture, class, ability and identity. Its mission is to catalyze community-wide healing and action. DnA WORKS has been a recipient of several grants, one from the US Embassy to conduct an oral history project with a Jewish community living in Sefwi Wiawso, Ghana.

Adam has presented his work at the International Peace Research Association in Calgary, Canada (2006), the Board of Jewish Education, California Institute of the Arts, the General Assembly of the United Jewish Communities, and Ayecha’s Jewish Leaders of Color Conference (2005, 2006). Mr. McKinney was invited to present a newly commissioned choreographic work in Johannesburg in January 2007 at FNB Dance Umbrella.
