okay everybody, take a deep breath and put on your drinkin’ shoes because its APAP season again!

Of course the two big show-fests are Under The Radar (UTR) at The Public (and other sites around town) and the Coil Festival at PS122. Both festivals have really strong line-ups and even share one show – Best of Edinburgh winner Between the Devil and The Deep Blue Sea.

Its really hard to play favorites with so much strong work being presented. UTR has a great line-up of mostly new work or NYC premieres with the exception of Young Jean Lee’s Church, which premiered at PS122, though the company reports that it has been changed significantly. Reggie Watts looks to be a favorite and Jay Scheib’s This Place Is A Desert will also probably be a tough ticket to get.

Probably the hardest ticket to get will be rotozaza’s etiquette which will be presented by The Foundry as part of UTR at the restaurant Veselka. Since it is designed for only two people at a time you should make reservations early. Last year I had the pleasure of working with rotozaza on presenting their remarkable show doublethink at PS122. I’m a big fan of theirs and you should be too.

The Coil Festival is bringing back some greatest hits from the past season(s), including BananaBag & Bodice, John Moran & Saori, The TEAM, Maria Hassabi and Krystina Lhotokava/LaS Company. A notable NYC premier is from Israeli choreographer Deganit Shemy. If you haven’t seen her work yet, make a point of checking it out.

COIL also has some off-site events including DUCKIE (at CSV) and a reprise performance of Rob Roth and Theo Kogan’s stunning rock-tastic performance piece Screen Test at Abrons Arts Center. Screen Test is two-nights only (January 12 & 13) and is in a beautiful 300-seat turn-of-the-last-century theater and it will sell out, so get your tickets ($20!!) early!!
