Queer women performance and video artists will present their work on Thursday, June 19 starting at 7 PM in I think of you when I.  This event is a one-night-only program of diverse performances presented in conjunction with Pink & Bent: Art of Queer Women, a show of visual art currently on view at Leslie/Lohman Gallery.  The performers’ work spans the breadth and explores the depth of queer experience in both subtle and overt ways.  Some are drag kings, some are lesbian icons, some are superheroes, some are two-dimensional, and some are not women.

The emcee for the evening, Murray Hill, “the hardest working middle-aged man in show business” is a beloved entertainer, infamous personality, newsmaker, and renowned comedian and host. Hailed as the “reigning patriarch of downtown performance” by The NY Times, he’s razzled the audiences into a frenzy and hosted thousands of shows and events such as: The International Burlesque Festivals, LeTigre, Gossip and Antony & the Johnsons concerts.

Artists include: J. Bob Alotta, Lily Baldwin, Susana Cook, J. Dellecave, Dynasty Handbag, Erin Markey, Tara Mateik, Sofia Varino and The Hungry Hearts, and Yalinidream.

About the exhibition:

Pink & Bent, curated by Pilar Gallego and Cora Lambert, is an exhibition of international artwork by queer women. The show presents audiences with a visual experience that depicts the many threads that sew queer women together as a community. Nearly 50 artists are included in Pink & Bent, such as Harmony Hammond, Phranc, Judy Chicago, Joan E. Biren, GB Jones, Phyllis Christopher, Ginger Brooks Takahashi, Celeste Dupuy-Spencer, Alice O’Malley, Gaye Chan, and Allyson Mitchell. The art of this exhibit explores gender roles, queer bodies, self-identity and self-representation through the depiction of the artists themselves, their friends, lovers and more.

About the Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation:

Recently described as by New York Times art critic Holland Cotter as “…a thoroughly nonmainstream pearl beyond price,” the LESLIE/LOHMAN GAY ART FOUNDATION (LLGAF) is a non-profit foundation established in 1990 to provide an outlet for artwork that is unambiguously gay and which is often denied access to mainstream venues. The Foundation annually mounts five exhibitions of art in all media by gay and lesbian artists that emphasize subject matter that speaks directly to queer sensibilities, including works with erotic, political, romantic and social imagery. LLGAF also provides special support for emerging and underrepresented artists through The ARCHIVE (a quarterly art journal); an artists slide registry; and a permanent collection of more than 3,000 works, including pieces by artists Duncan Grant, Keith Haring, Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau and Robert Mapplethorpe.
