TEAM performer Frank Boyd and a friend of Frank’s and I went down to South Philly yesterday to volunteer for the Obama campaign and I have to say the experience was unbelievable.  Truly.  The necessity for as many people to register as possible before the PA deadline on October 6th, and then getting them to vote cannot be overstated.  I talked with a 19-year old girl yesterday on the steps of her home who was not registered and had been taught all her life NOT to vote because the system was so corrupt anyway that “one African American doesn’t equal one vote” (her words).  Anyway, we talked for about 10 minutes, and at the end I got her to register.  And to pass a registration form on to her mom.  Who knows if she will vote, but I think it was an important encounter.

Anyway, the time they can MOST use volunteers is weekend days, but also 4pm-9pm every day of the week.  There’s a MONSTER PUSH to register people before October 6th, but then a monster push to get people persuaded and out.  Pennsylvania canNOT be lost.  It’s about $13 each way if you take NJ transit to PA public transport just down to Philly, and then I’m sure a cab to this office.  OR easy to split between a group a zipcar or car rental.  Less than 2 hours to get down there, so you really can go for a day.

And if you are unable to donate time, you can always donate money, and this is VITALLY important.  The office we were at yesterday could not afford campaign buttons. That is a small thing, and being able to hire people to organize and canvass is a far higher priority, but I think there is the risk that we take for granted how successful Obama has been with internet fundraising.  Some of you might know I’ve become an addict of donating – we’ll see how my bank account survives, but you can give $1 or $5 or $100 or more.  Whatever you can whenever you can until November 4th.

And make sure your address and registration are in and up to date. Of course you all know this, but we cannot be passive on any front in this election.

THIS ELECTION IS CRUCIAL – and the G.O.P has already started getting the names of people whose homes are in foreclosure to prepare to contest their votes if they have not appropriately changed their addresses and registrations.  American CANNOT withstand the continued assault of Bush/McCain/Palin.  Our economy is in danger, our infrastructure is crumbling, our education system is ailing, we’re enmeshed in a costly and pointless war and all of the public/civic enterprises have been sold off to greedy corporations. PLEASE don’t let the G.O.P use fear, prejudice, ignorance and just plain EVIL CHEATING TACTICS to continue ruining our country and plundering it for their own good.
