The Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications is requesting more information about WiFi in public spaces.

CITY HALL – The City is exploring ways to work with partners in the private and non-profit sector to provide free wireless internet service in New York City’s public parks, including Central Park, Prospect Park, Van Cortlandt Park, Flushing Meadows/Corona Park, and many others.

DoITT is requesting more information regarding their current efforts and future plans to develop wireless Internet service in New York City’s public parks. “This release marks an important step forward in leveraging current technologies to provide internet connectivity for New Yorkers in public locations,” stated Council Member Gale Brewer. “Concerns such as a sustainable business model for wireless parks await more evaluation and discussion, but it is imperative that wireless in parks and open spaces is viewed as a public service, and funded as such.” Brewer added, “Without the appropriate levels of support from city government, these projects cannot survive.”
