Hailed by the New York Times as “an explosive mixture of formal Javanese dance and wild movement,” “Diponegoro” is a dance theater work depicting the 19th-century Javanese prince and Muslim mystic who led a rebellion against the Dutch in the 1820s. Created by renowned director/choreographer Sardono Kusumo, and featuring a cast of eight Indonesian dancers and musicians, “Diponegoro” bridges tradition and contemporary dance to create a work of astounding originality.
