From May 12 thru 15th, Abrons Arts Center presents the iconic Joshua Light Show, led by multimedia artist Josh White, one of the most visible proponents of the psychedelic lightshow discipline popularized in the 1960s as a means to enliven the experience of live music, an experimental cinematic medium that is also essential to the visual culture of Rock. Artist and curator Nick Hallett has selected four evenings of incredible musical artists, including Silver Apples aka Simeon Coxe (who performed with the original Joshua Light Show at Bill Graham’s Fillmore East on a bill with no less than The Fugs and Norman Mailer) and pioneering English electronic musician, Sonic Boom with his band Spectrum, sharing an evening with Dean & Britta. Younger talent, culled mainly from Brooklyn’s ultravivid music scene rounds out this mini-festival, focusing on visionary, visual music. All performances, which run from May 12 through 15, begin at 8pm. Tickets will be $15 in advance/$20 at the door.

The Joshua Light Show is comprised of a team of New York’s most talented video and live cinema artsts, assembling to create this large-scale multimedia form. Using a variety of live projection and lighting techniques, including the classic “wet show”, the artists literally–in White’s words– “improvise with light,” creating in collaboration behind a screen in response to the music. The result is a unique attempt at synesthesia, and an arresting visual experience for music. Core artists of the Joshua Light Show under White’s direction include Alyson Denny, Seth Kirby, Brock Monroe, Doug Pope, and Bec Stupak.

The Joshua Light Show In Residence was made possible by Experimental Television Center Presentation Funds, funded by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. Media Sponsor for The Joshua Light Show in Residence is Oh My Rockness.
