Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City

On the first anniversary of Merce Cunningham’s passing, the dance community comes together to pay tribute to his influence by using his methods in his familiar spirit of rigorous play.

“Events,” in which Merce repurposed a piece from his repertoire for a specific occasion, embodied his sense of the here-and-now. Merce’s final “Event”–his last creation–was in Rockefeller Park, overlooking the Hudson River. Staging another “Event” in Battery Park City above the river connects us to his last New York moment and reaffirms Merce’s importance to the dance makers who follow him.

On a simple raised stage in the park, five different New York City choreographers, Lucinda Childs, Bill T. Jones, Susan Marshall, Jon Kinzel and Faye Driscoll, will each present a short performance. They will confront some of Merce’s favorite challenges, including live music created according to John Cage’s principles of chance composition and in-the-round staging, which forces a profound reconsidering of the frontal perspective. With the audience all around them, choreographers can present any type of work they wish, though they will be provided with background materials on Merce’s “Events” to guide and inspire their work.
