Solos & Solitudes is an presentation of solos guest-curated by Jenn Joy and Noemie Solomon, performance scholars who have also co-edited a catalogue of writings and conversations with choreographers Hilary Clark, Caroline Gravel, and Taisha Paggett. The three have been invited to create work related to Georges Didi-Huberman’s Le Danseur des solitudes (2006), and the evening promises “melancholic magic,” “bodystorming,” and investigation of Zumba and Autotune.

SUNDAY, APRIL 28

Emerging wunderkind terrible New Saloon premieres Cooking to me is Poetry at DUMBO’s Galapagos Art Space this Sunday. The Brooklyn-based theater collective’s new play fuzzes the Persephone myth to pose questions into agency, absence, and the Apollonian. Original music, indoor lakes, real family letters, real feelings, and the subtitles “fear / marriage / communication / failure of communication / fear.” + Post-theater dream pop by Sticklips.

MONDAY, APRIL 29

The Kitchen’s new series L.A.B (language, art and bodies) brings artists from different fields of contemporary performance together to share and respond to each others methods of making work. This hybrid event of conversation and artwork illuminates ways we share vocabularies as well as the very real differences that exist between our fields. The series should be of interest to those curious about cross-disciplinary collaboration (and who shouldn’t be?). The upcoming event will feature Sam Green, Maria Hassabi, Tina Satter and Alex Waterman.

All of a Sudden is a new collaboration between choreographer Jack Ferver and dramaturg Joshua Lubin-Levy using Tennessee Williams Suddenly Last Summer as source material to probe concepts of “play-acting, role playing, and friendship.”  With performer Jacob Slominski the three will use Williams’ brilliantly tragic and funny fault-lines to expose the limits of one’s self and the needs (whether real or imaginary) one has to shoulder the burden of existence.

Anyone interested in dramaturgy? Check out the roundtable discussion Movement Research is hosting with practicing dramaturgs Thomas F. DeFrantz, Susan Mar Landau, André Lepecki and Katherine Profeta. One of MR’s Studies Project’s, this one is titled “Dramaturgy as Practice/Dramaturgy in Practice”, conceived by Amanda Loulaki and Susan Mar Landau.
