Rock Me Dr. Zaius

So I was in the middle of writing this really, really in-depth and cogent article about how the Fringe Festival isn’t really all that “fringe-y” and has pretty much jumped the shark. I mean it was a really, really good essay. And then I got a press release that really said more than I could ever say. Well, maybe not, but certainly more succinctly – the show we’ve all been waiting for, taht promises to be the “most electrifiying” event in FringeNYC, Jonestown: The Musical.

geez.

  1. To quote BOTH Time Out and Village Voice from two years ago: “The Fringe is dead; long live the Fringe.”

Hmmm…there have always been shows in the Fringe for the wrong reasons…charlatans are never in short supply where the words “cutting-edge” or “next big thing” are bandied. Still, with 200+ shows on offer there’s still some pretty Fringe-y stuff in there. Um, but anyway, since GG Allin, does “Fringe” really mean anything? Oh you know, its like “alternative” or “indie” all over again. Is escaping co-option even possible? Is it always to be desired? If my gay copulation is simulated on Showtime, does that make it less subversive?

And hey, where are the trannies!—They still are the pilot light of what humanity should be.

A kickline still trumps a police line any day
