Poor Theater

“I always tell myself that even if we had a million dollars, this would be the choice,” he said. “Theater people make excuses – ‘If we only had more money.’ No. Work with what you have. Havel and the dissidents didn’t have money.”

So says Pavol Liska, director of Three Sisters at Classic Stage in today’s NY Times.

It is always encouraging to hear someone talk about what they can make from nothing rather than complain about what they can’t make because they have no money. We all would love to have unlimited budgets and make a living from our art, but at the same time most of the best work I’ve seen is just an actor (or a few actors) and a bare stage.
