Peripheral City – Call for Proposals
Red Dive, a BESSIE award-winning multi-arts collaborative is seeking sound, visual or performance artists for street installations to be included in Peripheral City: City of Refuge, a walking performance tour taking place in Chinatown on Sundays in May June 2005.
Red Dive will be selecting 1 – 3 projects that personally interpret
Chinatowns past, present or imagined future as an enclave and destination of refuge for immigrants across the globe. Chosen work will be placed in context of a historical walking tour that explores Chinatowns sites of sanctuary and over-shadowed role in forming Americas identity as an immigrant nation. City of Refuge will intermix layered histories, laws of immigration, oral histories, live music, and performance-installations.

City of Refuge, a Peripheral City project, is funded through the Franklin Furnace and Meet the Composer Foundation. Peripheral City is a project of Creative Capital. Red Dive is working closely with the Museum of the Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) and other organizations in the Chinatown community for the execution of this project.
1. To submit an idea for City of Refuge please send an introductory email to red_dive@hotmail.com.
Include the following:
a) Brief description of your artistic vision and project idea. List your projects staging needs including spatial requirements i.e. street corner, restaurant storefront, public steps, chain link fence etc. (less than 1 page). Please keep in mind that all projects must be temporary and
flexible.
b) What interests you about City of Refuge in Chinatown and how would it serve your artistic vision?
c) A few highlights of your work as an artist.
d) Any experience you have collaborating across disciplines/site-specific settings.
2. Based on what ideas will work best within the vision of City of Refuge, we will contact a small pool of artists by March 11th to request a formal proposal.
3. Final proposals will be due April 1st. Final artist(s) will be chosen by April 6th. Meeting with all artists, performers and Red Dive will be Sunday, April 10th.
4. Artist(s) chosen for City of Refuge will receive a fee. There are no material fees for this project. Fee amount will be discussed with artists upon proposal selection.
