Irish Modern Dance Theatre
Last night we saw IMDT’s opening night at P.S.122. Good stuff. Thomas Lehmen’s “it is better to…” is a sly, funny dance piece in which the movement patterns and phrases are motivated by the dancers completing the sentence “it is better to…” in surprising and inventive ways. It is better to…see IMDT in this dance piece.
Also on the bill is IMDT’s collaboration with Chris Yon. Those of you familiar with Chris’ work will know how fun and offbeat it is. This show is a fully realized version of Yon’s idiosyncratic vision with fantastic sound design and wonderful performances by John Scott, Taryn Griggs and Jeanine Durning.
Here’s the official stuff:
“[Choreographer John Scott’s IMDT] has the potential to yield the most interesting and original developments in European Dance.”
– Mike Dixon, Dance Europe
Based in Dublin and renowned for its assertive and original style, IMDT collaborates with two maverick choreographers to create an arresting double-bill. Together with Bessie Award-winning Brooklyn-based choreographer Chris Yon, they create the anarchic and quirky RrrrrrrKILLKILLKILL . . . to infinity (MAKE IT LOOK REAL) and explore a mutual fascination with randomness and meaningful
‘It is better to . . . ‘ is their collaboration with celebrated German choreographer Thomas Lehman. They respond to the human struggle to make things better – from better sex and better politics to being a better person or telling a better joke. Commissioned by IMDT for ESB Dublin Fringe Festival 2004, it was nominated for both “Best Production” and “Sexiest Show.”
