With song styles ranging from the heart-wrenching clarinet ‘miroloi’ of northern Greece to the funkier dance grooves of the Serbian and Macedonian Roma (gypsies); from the oriental mystery of Turkish çalgı ensembles to the driving power of Bulgarian wedding bands. Coming from such influential NYC-based groups as Zlatne Uste Balkan Brass Band, Slavic Soul Party!, the Zagnut Orkestar, and Romashka, the musicians of Ansambl Mastika have brought the music of Eastern Europe to a broad audience in the New York City area. With constant deference to stylistic authenticity, these musicians personalize the music, bringing a fresh perspective that maintains the tradition of getting audiences out of their seats and onto the dance floor.
