EmcArts RFP for Innovation Lab

Designed and managed by EmcArts, with support from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, the Innovation Lab for the Performing Arts is a nine- to twelve-month program designed to help performing arts organizations in the fields of presenting, theater, dance, and jazz incubate and test innovative strategies to address major challenges.

The lab provides organizations (selected on a competitive basis) with space, time, and resources to explore and accelerate the design and testing of new organizational change strategies for which they are both ready and committed, with the purpose of addressing specific challenges and providing a set of compelling “prototypes” for the future.

The lab includes individual coaching, group facilitation, a five-day intensive retreat (October 25-30, 2009) with specialized faculty, and a variety of extended support systems tailored to the needs of each organization. The program provides accommodation and meals for all participants in the retreat, and a contribution of up to $400 per person toward travel costs. The program also provides up to $2,000 per organization toward the expense of bringing a consultant to the retreat, and up to $2,000 per organization to provide stipends for unsalaried artists on the program team to attend the retreat. Program teams are also eligible for grants of $25,000 each following the retreat to maintain organizational momentum toward implementation and to assist with follow-up activities.

Round 3 of the Innovation Lab is open to all American producing and presenting organizations in theater, dance, and jazz, including college-based presenters. Partnership applications are also encouraged. Partnerships may include other organizations in or outside of the arts (including international partners), but an eligible organization must be the lead partner. Four organizations will be chosen to participate.
