13P (Thirteen Playwrights, Inc.), the OBIE Award-winning theater company comprised of 13 playwrights, will present the world premiere of Ann Marie Healy’s (P#6) “HAVE YOU SEEN STEVE STEVEN?” to be directed by 2007 OBIE Award-winning director Anne Kauffman. “HAVE YOU SEEN STEVE STEVEN” will be performed at The East 14th Street Theater, 344 East 14th Street (between 1st and 2nd Avenues), with performances running from September 15 through October 6.
Lost in a labyrinth of Midwestern McMansions, teenager Kathleen Clarkson senses that something is very wrong with her world but nothing prepares her for the arrival of Hank Mountain. This friendly neighbor and his elusive partner-in-crime, Vera, stop over to bring brownie bars and chat about the property taxes. What her parents don’t realize is that they’ve also come as harbingers of annihilation. When an all-knowing exchange student pops in from afar to join these two neighbors from “just down the way,” a fairy tale of make-believe dissolves into a nightmare — both hilarious and terrifying — that reveals the instability at the core of everything Kathleen knows. “HAVE YOU SEEN STEVE STEVEN?” is a disconcerting comic drama that teases our sense of reality and safety and questions the places that we call home.
Ann Marie Healy’s play The Night That Roger Went to Visit the Parents of His Old High School Girlfriend premiered in the 2006 E.S.T. Marathon of One-Act Plays directed by Andrew McCarthy, and her Now That’s What I Call a Storm was produced by the Edge Theater Company, directed by Carolyn Cantor, and featured Marylouise Burke. Healy’s writing is published through Samuel French, Smith & Kraus, Playscripts and in The Kenyon Review. In addition to being a member of 13P she is also an affiliated artist with the OBIE Award-winning theater company Clubbed Thumb; a member of MCC’s Playwrights Coalition; a former member of the Soho Rep Writer/Director Lab, and a writing fellow at New River Dramatists.
Anne Kauffman received a 2007 OBIE Award for her direction of Adam Bock’s The Thugs at Soho Rep, which Time Out NY and the New York Sun both named as one of the top ten productions of 2006. She followed this production in New York with her direction of Jenny Schwartz’s critical and audience hit God’s Ear presented by New Georges this past spring at the East 13th Street Theater. Her other recent directing credits include Stunning by David Adjmi with Wooly Mammoth Theater; Expecting Isabel by Lisa Loomer at Asolo Repertory Theater; Act A Lady by Jordan Harrison at the Humana Festival of New Plays; Typographer’s Dream by Adam Bock at San Francisco’s Encore Theater; and The Ladies by Anne Washburn with the Civilians at Dixon Place and Cherry Lane Theater.
