Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

Distant early warning:

Coming to the Public Theater, opening May 5, is A PUBLIC LAB Production
Written and Directed by Alex Timbers
Music and Lyrics by Michael Friedman

A Collaboration Between Center Theatre Group And The Public Theater in Association With Les Freres Corbusier

–a concert version of a new musical by Alex Timbers and Michael Friedman, which I saw a year ago in Los Angeles. It’s an “emo musical,” a fictionalized biography of populist president Andrew Jackson with an onstage rock band and some pretty stupid 19th-century politicians. Watching it in a staged version last year I was fascinated by the bunch of teenaged girls, sitting in the back, who were just swooning with delight at this thing. If you all promise to go see it (tickets are only $10) we can talk about it here. My favorite lyric: “Life sucks—and my life sucks in particular.”
