Darmstadt Institute June 2-30 at ISSUE Project Room

ISSUE Project Room Presents the Darmstadt Institute, a festival of interdisciplinary programming including concerts, lectures, workshops, film screenings, and talkbacks which celebrates and critically examines the continuum of the experimental tradition in music and related media. Click here for a full schedule.

Highlights for this year’s Institute include an all-star two-day celebration of Anthony Braxton’s 65th birthday co-presented with his Tri Centric Foundation, a rare performance by sound art pioneer Z’EV, a special appearance by William Basinski (at ISSUE Project Room’s future home at 110 Livingston St.), an evening of Biomusic hosted by scholar Branden Joseph, an homage to the composer Luc Ferrari led by David Grubbs, a quartet of pianists (Kathleen Supové, Steven Gosling, Emily Manzo, and Michael Century) performing Pauline Oliveros’s “Gathering Together” for eight-hands, and premieres by Elliott Sharp, Zeena Parkins, Mikael Karlsson, Dafna Naphtali, Aaron Siegel and many others. Ensembles performing during the month include Wet Ink Ensemble, Mantra Percussion, Flutronix, Tabor Wind Quintet, Batteries Duo, Cadillac Moon Ensemble, Magic Names Group, and Ensemble Pamplemousse among others. On June 4th Grouper will perform pieces from her album Way Their Crept for the first time outside of Portland, as well as new keyboard material. (These pieces have not been possible to perform before because of the logistics of playing live with an instrument as heavy and fragile as the keyboard used.) Also, a new tape collage called “Ascend/Descend” will be performed through the ISSUE’s 15 channel speaker system.

Doors at 8 pm, performances at 8:30 pm. All shows are $10 ($9 in advance, $8 members) unless noted.
