LAPP It Up at Bootleg with LAX

Now that we’ve got boots on the ground in SoCal, you’ll be receiving the occasional report from your intrepid Culturebot founder on things going on in the land of the Endless Summer. First up is the The Second Annual Live Arts Exchange (LAX) presented from September 11 – 21, 2014 by Los Angeles Performance Practice and The Bootleg Theater. We plan to be up there for the opening festivities on the 11th and catch the roster of shows scheduled for Saturday, September 13th. If you’re planning to attend, seek me out and say “Hi”.

“Actress Fury” by Jennie MaryTai Liu

I’m looking forward to catching Jennie MaryTai Liu’s Actress Fury that I missed at Bushwick Starr  earlier this year (read the Culturebot interview between Jennie and 600 Highwaymen), a work-in-progress showing of Meg Wolfe’s New Faithful Disco and Holcombe Waller’s new piece Surfacing all in one day!

Unfortunately we probably won’t be able to make it to week two for Zoe Aja Moore’s Dedicated to a True Lover (and therefore probably nobody) which is a participatory mash-up riff on Fassbinder, Sleighting or Phil Soltanoff’s An Evening With William Shatner Asterisk (a show we first saw in Austin, TX at Fusebox back in 2012). It seems like Week 1 is mostly dance/music, Week 2 more video/performance. Either way, an interesting and promising line-up for the second edition of this up-and-coming festival.

Lots of familiar names – Jennie MaryTai Liu, Phil Soltanoff, Keith Skretch, Daniel Jackson – and lots of energy. Word has it that former REDCAT George Lugg has joined forces with Meg Wolfe to work on Showbox LA that just presented Okwui Okpokwasili’s Bronx Gothic in July … I look forward to seeing some old friends and meeting some new ones and feeling the energy I’ve been hearing so much about!

The press release confirms what I’ve already heard about Bootleg, that it is an “inclusive art space for original, boundary-defying live theater and performance born from the diverse cultural and artistic landscape of Los Angeles,” and I’ve been hearing about Miranda Wright’s Los Angeles Performance Practice for awhile. I dig the mission: “By contributing to a shared knowledge, resources, and conversational critique; artists within this network will transform the cultural landscape of Los Angeles and beyond.”

Onward and upward, LAX!
