Kissing to Be CleverLeigh Bowery

For those of you who missed the brief run of Charles Atlas’ captivating documentary The Legend of Leigh Bowery a few months back, you’re in luck. It’s coming back to the Two Boots Pioneer Theater for a return engagement, March 18-26.

FYI: Leigh Bowery was one of the first nightlife figures to merge the world of the nightclub and performance art. Before there was Jackie 60 there was Leigh Bowery. Don’t know who Leigh Bowery was or what Jackie 60 is? Oy. We have a lot of work to do.

Opening night (March 18) is a benefit for FEVA. See the movie and go to the after-party at Plaid with Boy George as guest DJ and a costume contest with a $500 prize.

The NYTimes.com says: (login required)

“…the film makes a case for Bowery as a significant artistic catalyst blazing a glittery trail at the intersection of fashion, pop music and surrealist performance.”

The movie features appearances by Boy George, Rifat Ozbek, Damien Hirst, Michael Clark, Bella Freud, and many other nightlife icons of 80’s London.

So, that sounds pretty cool. Not everybody can be a muse for Lucian Freud, go to a disco with a toilet seat as a headpiece, give birth to a naked woman onstage at Wigstock or in other ways raise fashion into performance art. Leigh Bowery was and did.
